Su trabajo se orienta a la relación de la nutrición y factores de riesgo para enfermedades crónicas a lo largo de la vida. Desde 1990 ha recibido apoyo para diferentes proyectos por parte del Organismo Internacional de la Energía Atómica orientados al desarrollo de las técnicas nucleares en estudios de fisiología y nutrición. Los proyectos incluyen trabajos sobre requerimientos de energía y factores de riesgo en enfermedades cardiovasculares. Ha trabajado en proyectos con comunidades indígenas, con los Yaquis y desde hace 15 años con los Pimas de la montaña de Sonora y de Arizona en EUA, con patrocinio del NIH. El trabajo con los Pimas versa sobre la importancia de los factores genéticos y ambientales en el desarrollo de la obesidad y diabetes tipo 2. Mas recientemente ha trabajado con problemas de obesidad en niños y adolescentes en México y América Latina.
