Abstract

Objective: To analyze decent work in Mexico and its surrounding regions. Methodology: Using the principal components technique, a Decent Employment Index (DEI) is calculated with data from the National Survey of Occupation and Employment INEGI (2022). Results: The North and Center regions, with a Very High and High Decent Employment Index, respectively, reflect the best situation of decent employment in the country, while the Center-North region is classified in the medium stratum, as well as the country. For the South region, a Very Low decent employment index was obtained, showing the worst situation in promoting and disseminating decent work in Mexico. Limitations: The Decent Employment Index presented was calculated only for the country, regions, and states but not at the sectoral level. Conclusions: Thirteen states are in a critical situation due to having an IED that classifies them in the Low and Very Low strata. In the North-Central region: Nayarit, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Michoacán, and Zacatecas; in the Central region: Guanajuato, Hidalgo, and Puebla; while in the South region: Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Veracruz. Therefore, it is essential to direct efforts to promote and disseminate decent work in these three entities.
