El efecto de la identidad social en la acción colectiva: un modelo para explicar la conformación de cooperativas

Resumen

Objetivo: explicar cómo incide la identidad social en las decisiones individuales al presentarse un problema de acción colectiva, específicamente para constituir una cooperativa. Metodología: planteamiento de una variante al modelo de diferenciación horizontal de Hotelling siguiendo una perspectiva marginalista. Resultados: (1) la identidad social puede favorecer la conformación de una masa crítica para desencadenar la acción colectiva; (2) los incentivos sociales permiten superar el dilema de credibilidad entre los miembros de un grupo, favoreciendo la cooperación; (3) el sentido de identidad da lugar a que el número de participantes en un esfuerzo colectivo exceda el tamaño óptimo del grupo, lo cual implica la necesidad de controlar la membresía. Limitaciones: es necesario recabar información empírica para comprender mejor la incidencia que tiene la identidad social en la conformación de cooperativas y otras formas de economía social. Conclusiones: la identidad social puede convertirse en un recurso para la acción, favoreciendo que los individuos en una comunidad actúen colectivamente para superar fallas del mercado o del Estado.
