Abstract

Objective: To analyze the barriers and drivers that affect the sustainability of the extensive cattle value chain in Yucatán, based on the perceptions of local stakeholders, in order to design intervention strategies that foster the transition toward more sustainable models. Methodology: The value chain was examined through semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders and additionally, participatory workshops were conducted to identify barriers and drivers. PESTEL and SWOT were used to characterize the value chain’s internal capabilities and to identify threats and opportunities. Results: The mapping revealed a complex, asymmetric structure, with link fragmentation and power imbalances. Prominent barriers include the presence of intermediaries, producers' limited capture of added value, and institutional constraints. Key drivers include a local innovation network composed of producers that promotes the adoption of good livestock practices, the auction as a transparent marketing mechanism, and diversification into differentiated markets. Limitations: No quantitative data were generated and youth and women were underrepresented. Conclusion: Stakeholder participation in this analysis enabled an understanding of specific challenges and opportunities, providing essential input for context-sensitive strategies that enhance the sustainability of livestock systems through certification schemes, innovation, knowledge transfer, and appropriate public policies.
