Gobernanza de las cadenas de valor sustentable de la pesca: entre el Norte y el Sur Global.
Governing Sustainable Seafood
Abstract
Objective: The book Governing Sustainable Seafood studies the difficulties and challenges faced by the social movements in favor of sustainability in fishing and aquaculture, which seek to promote environmentally friendly harvesting and production practices and provide healthy seafood. Methodology: The research methodology is supported by a comprehensive review of literature about fisheries governance and aquaculture production, and by fieldwork based on interviews with actors involved in the organization of value chains (NGOs, companies, governments, consumers, local/regional associations of fishermen, and aquaculture producers). Results: Simon R. Bush and Peter Oosterveer propose a novel theoretical framework around the seafood value chains, when analyzing them as dynamic socio-economic structures that articulate territories, material resources, ecosystems, practices and institutions, at different scales. Limitations: A limitation that we observe in the book is the scant reference to sustainability initiatives promoted by actors from the Global South, such as certification projects originating in developing countries, and the collective actions of local groups to conserve the natural resources of their territories. Conclusions: The authors argue that the main challenge for studying the sustainability of seafood production is to understand the complex interactions between the State and the various actors of civil society, which give rise to a mosaic of regulatory instruments in fishing and aquaculture. Keywords:
