Producción de cerveza en Chihuahua. ¿Estrategia de desarrollo sustentable para la región o exportación indirecta de recursos hídricos?
Beer production in Chihuahua: A regional sustainable development strategy or hidden water resources export?
Abstract
Objective: Analyze the use of underground water resources in the central region of the border state of Chihuahua in the context of the recent relocation of beer production activities in Mexico. Methodology: The analysis is organized in two phases, the first consists of estimating indicators of use intensity per aquifer based on vector data. The second applies remote sensing tools to the analysis of multispectral satellite images in raster format acquired through the Sentinel-2 project, a project led by the European Copernicus Commission, designed specifically for environmental monitoring purposes on a regional scale. Results: The degree of inequality existing in the distribution of the concessioned volume is identified. An imbalance is documented between the parameters of use and recharge of water resources, which suggests an unsustainable extraction pattern in the study area. Limitations: Given that the operation of the brewery plant in the Chihuahua region studied dates back to 2018, achieving long-term monitoring will require additional studies. A qualitative perspective that captures the perception of local actors is not offered, which is desirable as complementary research. Conclusions: Evidence is provided that the execution of the beer production project in the central region of Chihuahua occurs in an area that presents conditions of overexploitation, Therefore, it is necessary to implement management strategies to prevent adverse environmental impacts.
