Abstract

Objective: to analyze the relationship between cutting-based foliage management systems, income generation, and their effects on forest cover in Veracruz, Mexico. Methodology: a survey was conducted among 304 foliage producers in six municipalities. Data was collected on production systems, socioeconomic characteristics, and income from foliage. Statistical analyses were conducted to compare production systems and their contribution to the Rural Income Poverty Line (LPIR). Results: findings indicate that Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) contribute, on average, more than 50% of their income to the LPIR of households cultivating foliage. Rustic foliage collection systems maintain greater forest cover but generate lower incomes compared to other systems; on the other hand, intensive systems generate higher incomes but have a negative impact on forest cover. In contrast, systems that combine species maintain forest cover, generate income, and contribute to biodiversity conservation. This study expands knowledge on the contribution of NTFPs to family income and sustainability. Limitations: this is a case study; however, it contains elements that can be replicated in other Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) system Conclusions: The importance of considering the impact of production systems from both economic and environmental perspectives is highlighted. The results are relevant for policies and community management of production systems that balance economic benefits with conservation.
