Indicators of urban sustainability in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain
Abstract
Objective: To contribute to the knowledge of indicators for urban sustainability in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain, presents particularity since it is a territory with administrative, fiscal, organizational and territorial management autonomy unique in the Iberian Country and is selected for study of the economic, socio-urban and environmental indicators that have an immediate impact on the population. They help to guide or indicate Methodology: A review of the literature on the subject, and the official documents of Bilbao. This was carried out on the indicators that exist and with the support of statistical data to find out sustainability indicators; In addition, it is enriched with an interview with a city council official and surveys conducted on the site that contributed to studying the above-mentioned indicators. Results: The importance of income/GDP/per capita, in Bilbao and in the three capitals of the Basque territory is explained. In these places is where the strength of the Basque Country and its differences between its three main cities are expressed, as well as the comparison with Spain and other countries of Europe. In addition, the most important economic problem in the city is expressed through the surveys conducted on the site. Then the effect of mobility and space on people in the City of Bilbao, and the selected neighborhoods is analyzed. In the urban area, the city and its county, as well as the historical territory of Bizkaia, where the largest population of that region is located, and its population decrease in the last two decades are relevant. Regarding the environment, the importance of reducing energy consumption, reducing the use of private vehicles, the use of alternative transport and the trend of water self-sufficiency, and the problem of possible flooding by the estuary in nearby areas is considered. Limitations: Better, understand indicators that are applicable to medium-sized cities based on quantitative and qualitative data in urban planning and spatial planning, citizen participation strategies, economic and social impact of improving public services. Conclusions: The indicators express that mobility-displacement and public space are important issues for the sustainability of a city. The city is one million inhabitants, which is linked to the availability of economic and natural resources and the adequate use of improving renewable energy, since the tasks and actions that are carried out have an impact on urban land, and on the transformation experienced by cities like Bilbao, in the Basque Country, Spain.Keywords:
