Food systems transformation: Global challenges, local solutions, and sustainability in Mexico

Objective: To address these issues globally and within the context of Mexico, identifying opportunities in traditional practices and sustainable innovations. Problem statement: To analyze the environmental impact of current systems, with a focus on water and carbon footprints, as well as the structural barriers that hinder the shift toward more sustainable models. Methodological approach: Preparing this essay involved conducting interviews with farmers, along with a bibliographic review, to gather reliable information about food systems in Mexico and their relationship with sustainability, equity, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Primary sources (FAO, UNFSS, and Coneval reports) and secondary sources (academic articles, scientific reviews, and data analyses) were used, prioritizing information published between 2018 and 2024. Conclusion: This essay calls for collective action, highlighting the role of individual food choices in achieving global sustainability.
