Los trabajos en caracterización de genes y proteínas del camarón son temas centrales en nuestro laboratorio desde hace tiempo y se enfocan al camarón blanco del Pacífico Litopenaeus vannamei por su interesante biología y bioquímica, así como por su importancia para la camaronicultura, que es una fuente importante de divisas para el Noroeste de México.  
Durante la respuesta al estrés se generan especies reactivas de oxígeno (ROS) que al acumularse ocasionan daño celular y genético, por lo que estudiamos las enzimas antioxidantes responsables de su degradación en respuesta al estrés oxidativo. Los trabajos más recientes se dirigen a entender los efectos de la hipoxia y reoxigenación en camarón, porque este crustáceo es capaz de sobrevivir con poco oxígeno por tiempos considerables, pero aún no se conocen bien los procesos, mecanismos o adaptaciones que para ello utiliza.   
Por otro lado, durante la hipoxia se activa la glucólisis anaerobia. Por ello, estamos estudiando proteínas del metabolismo central energético, particularmente los de la primera parte del metabolismo de carbohidratos (glucólisis y transporte de glucosa) y su regulación mediada por el factor de transcripción HIF-1. Asimismo, durante la hipoxia en vertebrados, se presenta apoptosis, que también estamos estudiando por su  relación al factor de transcripción p53 y su interacción con HIF-1.
