Thiosulphate Citrate Bile-salts Sucrose (TCBS) medium

A selective agar for bacteria of the genus Vibrio developed by Kobayashi et al. (1963. Nippon Saikingaku Zasshi 18:387-392). It strongly inhibits the growth of other bacteria due to the presence of bile salts, therefore, it is also not suggested for any posterior analyses. But it is very useful for purification of vibrios since colony morphology can significantly varied among species and strains. It is recommended, for this purpose, to let the colxonies grow for 48-72 h. Since it is composed of many ingredients not easily acquired, we recommend buying it from commercial sources. It is NOT necessary to add extra salt (NaCl), since already has an adequate amount for the growth of most vibrios.
