The Bacteriology Lab was one of the first laboratories established at CIAD Mazatlán Unit for Aquaculture and Environmental Management in 1993.
The Lab has focused its research efforts to elucidate the role of bacteria, of the genus Vibrio, in the pathogenic process in penaeid shrimps.
We are also interested in the development of antibiotic resistance among vibrios.
Biodiversity of bacteria in the culture systems of aquatic organisms is also a mayor topic of the Lab; species of interest are penaeid shrimp, oysters, and marine fishes.
Taxonomy of the Vibrionaceae plays now a very important role in the Lab activities and several new species have been described and other are in the process of description.
The Bacteriology lab also houses the Collection of Aquacultural Important Microorganisms (CAIM), which serves as a repository of bacteria for research purposes and also provides external services. It is registered at the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC).
